See How Moulding Totally Transformed This Parisian Chic Bedroom

Like many of us in cities, I live in a new build, devoid of character or interesting details like mill work or trim. Clients always ask how they can add interest and character to a basic box of a room. More often than not, I suggest applying trim to the walls which includes panel moulding, chair rail and crown moulding.

Feeling like the shoemaker’s daughter, I decided it was high time I took my own advice and so I set my sights on my tired looking bedroom. As with most client’s homes, the bedroom is the room that we never seem to decorate as we tend to focus on the more public spaces.

Installing trim is a simple and inexpensive project if you’re inclined to DIY. I’m not that handy, so I hired a trim carpenter to install the moulding.

It’s also my preference that the panel moulding be painted the same colour as the walls, in my case a soft, restful off white from Farrow and Ball Pointing. If painted white on a wall with colour, the panel moulding ends up looking like empty picture frames.

I cannot believe what a difference this detail has made to the bedroom.

Of course, there are other things we did to update the space like install hardwood, add custom drapes, replace the headboard and customize my closet!

A little detail that goes a long way is wallpapering the back of shelving. It adds a luxe touch to a closet, and makes for a beautiful backdrop to books and decor.
