A Moody Muskoka Cottage Kicks Off a New Season of Scott’s Vacation House Rules

Scott’s Vacation House Rules is back and the newest season kicked off with one of the most memorable renovations yet. In the season 6 premiere, brothers-in-law Stephen and James wanted to transform their family cottage into an income-generating getaway, but they needed help. A lot of help.

Not only was the cottage outdated, but there was wasted space and, therefore, wasted income potential. Luckily, Scott McGillivray is a pro at transforming weathered properties into memorable getaways. And, with an assist from designer Debra Salmoni, he took this property from a forgettable cabin in the woods to a dreamy moonrise vacation home that leaves you with all the vibes.

This vacation retreat packs a punch from the second you step onto the new property. The moody exterior stands out against the fresh landscaping and new stairs, creating an instant vibe as soon as you pull up.

The Open Concept Space

When you think of ideal getaways with friends and families, there’s plenty of room for everyone to hang out. Scott and Debra were going for that with this open-concept design, which features a beautiful support beam on the ceiling and dark paint throughout. Natural finishes and wood make it modern but accessible, creating a dreamy vacation space.

Cooking With Ease

Before, the kitchen featured apartment-sized appliances that weren’t ideal for feeding families or larger crowds. There was also minimal prep and seating space, which didn’t work. So, Scott and Debra reconfigured the space to add this big and functional kitchen, which features open-shelf storage, a large waterfall island, and a dramatic backsplash that ties the layout together.

Seating For All

The cozy new living room is inviting but functional, thanks to the addition of oversized chairs and a corner fireplace. There is plenty of room for families or groups to hang out in the evenings or on rainy days with a board game or snacks, and lots of mood lighting via the various lamps to set the tone after the sun goes down.

The various bedrooms throughout this property also received an upgrade, but they still fit the moody moon vibes. This bedroom, for example, features a gorgeous natural edge headboard and plenty of cozy throws and pillows, but it’s also low-key themed, thanks to the moon-like orb light perched above.

A Luxurious Bathroom

Before, the bathroom was small and cramped. But by taking some of the space from an oversized bedroom and adding more dark paint and natural wood tones, this bathroom is now a spa-like escape full of thoughtful finishes and modern touches.

Enjoying the View

The real reason anyone escapes to the lake is to see the lake. So, Scott and Debra ensured the back was a comfortable and appealing area to hang out in, too. The tiered deck features plenty of seating and dining options, whether you’re enjoying a quiet morning coffee or a boisterous family dinner. Thanks to the modern rails and dark wood stain, it also feels like an extension of the indoor living areas.

Here for the Moonrise

You can’t advertise a moonrise property without ample space to enjoy the moonrise, which is why Scott and Debra added this quaint outdoor area to the backyard. From here, guests can peer at the moon through the telescope, hang out on the blankets and gaze at the stars. It’s the perfect finishing touch on a property bound to attract vacationers all season long.
