When it comes to having a true dream home, many of us believe it’s too costly and out of reach. Well, Home Network’s newest host, Kristen Coutts, disagrees. She’s here to prove that not only can you glamorize your home without breaking the bank, but you can do it yourself.
We sat down with the host of Beer Budget Reno to get to know her a little better ahead of the exciting new series. From design inspirations to star signs, we wanted to know, who is Kristen Coutts?

How Did It Feel Becoming a Home Network Host?
“I was in disbelief for a long time. When our director of development told we were getting the show, that it was greenlit, I was like ‘Okay, cool’ and she asked me ‘What’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you more excited?’ But I just don’t count my chickens before they hatch. So, I took my time to celebrate.”

Who Inspired You to Get Into Design?
“I grew up watching Scott McGillivray, love watching Scott’s Vacation House Rules. It was a show I watched all the time. Then, when I saw that display at Younge-Dundas Square a few weeks ago and saw our faces side by side on that big screen, it was a really surreal moment.” Obviously, we had to ask if that meant Kristen had gotten the chance to meet Scott since joining the Home Network. “Yes! I met him here at the Home Network offices a few months ago for the brand launch.”
What Does a Normal Day For Kristen Look Like?
“Well, we’re still filming for Beer Budget Reno right now. Most days I would say typically start around 5:15, kind of get myself ready. Some days I get out before my kids wake up, get a minute to give them a little squeeze each, get their breakfast ready, and then I head to set. We have really fun days; I work with some of the best people. I never understood when people said, ‘do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Working on this show has been the first time I’ve felt that. Then, it’s come home, cook dinner, and start the bath time routine with the kids.”

What’s Your Zodiac Sign?
“I’m right on the cusp of a Capricorn and Aquarius, but when I read the two horoscopes, I feel like I’m more aligned with an Aquarius.” Since Aquarius is known for being independent, creative and humanitarian, we agree that fits Kristen pretty well. After all, with a show that’s all about teaching others how to both save money and glam your home yourself, it doesn’t get much more Aquarius than that.
Are You More of a Traveler or Homebody?
“Traveler for sure! One of my previous careers was actually with a travel company, I ran all of their communications and global events, I was away more than I was home, so I’m a big traveler. One of the people who are on the show, Jody, who helped me with the design, we’ve known each other for 20 years and she and I actually took a four month trip after we graduated university. So, definitely traveler.”
What’s Your Favourite Movie?
“I have a very unhealthy obsession with the Harry Potter franchise. I know it’s twenty-something years later and I should probably grow out of magic, but it’s not going to happen.” The next logical question had to be which of the eight were her favourite. “One of the first couple. The first or second are my favourite, probably the second one because the later ones get really dark. I like the fantasy of the magic and discovering the magic world.”
How Would You Describe Your Style?
“Budget glam are the first two words that come to mind. It’s all about achieving that glamorous sort of “champagne look” on a budget. If you want an actual style, I’d say transitional. I love traditional wainscotting and grand chandeliers, herringbone and chevron floors, but I also like that super modern touch of some more linear lines. So, transitional is where my design style is, but how I want to achieve that is I want that glamorous look on a budget.”
What Should Audiences Expect From the Show?
“I want them to feel like renos are attainable and that they can do it themselves. So often shows will have these six-figure budgets for renovations and that’s not realistic for a lot of everyday people. Some people don’t have the money to hire someone else to do it, so I want to show people that it’s attainable to do it yourself. I want them to see that it’s not as hard as they might think it would be. Breaking down the steps and showing those little tips and tricks so people walk away from the show feeling empowered to do so.”
Were There Any Standout Moments?
“My favourite part in every episode is working with the homeowners. For me, when I started my social media account, before I had the show, my whole thing was teaching people to do it themselves. That and there’s always an element each episode where I get to teach the homeowner a new skill. In most cases, they’re able to take that new skill and see a project through to its completion. So, I’d say seeing their confidence grow.”

What’s Next For Kristen Coutts?
“Well, we booked a vacation because it’s been a very long time since we’ve been away. My family and I are going to go to Mexico for a week. After that, I think I’m going to dive back into the social media side of things. With a very full filming schedule, developing that content has taken a bit of a backseat. I want to get back to providing these tutorials and there’s a few projects around my own home too.”
