Small linen closets often tend to be an overlooked space. This type of closet can become quite cluttered and overwhelming to tackle as unused and old sheets and towels start to pile up and accumulate. A well-organized linen closet not only saves time but can also reduce stress by eliminating the need to rummage through the mess to find what you need. In this article, I’ll share how to organize a small linen closet and maximize the space using a few simple products.

Materials Required:

Step 1: Declutter and Sort

The first step is to declutter. Pull everything out of the closet and start to group items into categories such as bedding, towels, toiletries, cleaning supplies and seasonal items. For items that are worn out and/or not suitable for use, discard or donate as you see appropriate.

Step 2: Find Suitable Storage Options

The most critical part of maximizing a small closet space is to find storage options that are appropriate and versatile. I recommend a variety of foldable fabric storage boxes in different sizes, baskets, clothing organizers with dividers and tiered storage organizers.

Storage options that have a clear window pane or made from a transparent material will be super helpful as you’ll be able to easily see what’s being stored in them.

There are also some great duvet/sheet set organizers made specifically for this purpose, however, they often have higher price points. Clothing organizers that have dividers, like the ones shown below, are a great affordable alternative to separate duvet and sheets sets.

Step 3: Organize Items by Frequency of Use

Consider placing the most frequently used items at eye level and ensure they are easily accessible. Items that are seasonal or extra bedding and linens should be stacked away in storage boxes and placed on the top or bottom shelf.

Step 4: Labeling is Key

To make it super easy to locate items that are not frequently used, labels are your best friend. You can either accomplish this with a label maker or simply handwrite them on sticky labels.

Step 5: Maximize Vertical Space

There is often a larger vertical space between the closet floor and the bottom shelf or the very top shelf. Consider maximizing these vertical spaces with tiered storage. These areas are great to store extra toiletries and cleaning supplies.

Step 6: Seasonal Audit

Lastly, audit your inventory once every season. The change of seasons is a great time to swap in/out items, discard any unwanted linens or make a donation. Doing this at a minimum of twice a year will ensure this closet space is much easier to organize.

I hope these tips were helpful!
