Nurseries are magical rooms where you can really unleash your creativity. They’ve got doodads bobbing over the cribs — a.k.a mobiles — and sweet little shelves filled with sweet little books. And delightful stuffies and zany rugs and fun artwork. So much layering potential! You can go wild and pack lots in, or keep it spare and serene. Here are some popular baby girl nursery trends to consider, whichever way you go.
Baby’s Got Bouclé
Soft, nubby fabrics like bouclé are ideal in nurseries. They add a textural element and, hey, this material is a soft landing pad when baby starts crawling and standing. Designer Andrea Grbic used it to beautiful effect on this bucket chair in her daughter Leoni Colette’s nursery. Cream is stunning and lulling against pale wood!
Heed the Reed
Tambour, or reeded, wood is a grooved decorative detail that’s been popular of late. If you prefer a neutral baby girl’s nursery, then this treatment is for you! Don’t forget to tour this room by designer Andrea Grbic in greater detail.
Art and Animals
If you don’t have artwork up in your baby girl’s room, what exactly are you doing? These six perfectly placed pieces showcase sweet animals — a theme that never goes out of style. Note how the artwork anchors the dresser (the art isn’t hung too high so it appears to float). The wallpaper also adds a layer of depth and whimsy to the space by Atmosphere Interior Design.
Paint the Ceiling
The ceiling is often considered as the fifth wall— and yet it can be an afterthought. If you want to create a cocooning and finished effect, why not try painting it? We love how unexpected it looks in this tightly coordinated pink-and-white room.
Dive Into Drapery
Whether you’re creating a girl’s or boy’s nursery, black-out blinds and good-quality drapery in general are essential. Sleep is such an important part of the child (and parenting) experience. Stylishly speaking, curtains draw the eye upward, soften hard surfaces and are beautifully inviting.
Wow With Wallpaper
This show-stopping girl’s nursery room by TOM Interior Design Studio features over-scale swans against a salmon-toned backdrop. When in doubt, wallpaper is your best friend. The designers kept the rest of the room neutral and texturally punchy to let the swans shine. The lucky girl who lives here? That’s fashion stylist and TV personality Erica Wark’s little cygnet.
Oatmeal Everything and Vintage Inspiration
Beige is back with a force in interiors. The oatmeal tones make for a much warmer ambience instead of white as shown in this nursery by Rebecca Simon of Maison Ellie Interiors. Also turning heads? On-trend rattan storage baskets, a rattan chair and cute bunny artwork. (A word on that wallpaper below.)
Go Grandmillennial
Granny chic —or grandmillennial — rooms are laden in chintz and chandeliers. Or there are quieter interpretations, like this room by designer Rebecca Simon. It features Wiltshire Blossom by Liberty of London wallpaper (through Finest Wallpaper) and looks straight out of Little House on the Prairie in the best way. It’s so right pulled across a canted ceiling.
Carve Out a Nook
Your baby’s nursery will one day host a toddler, and then a tween and so on. Think ahead by building a reading bench. That’s what architectural designer Sacha Lee of Aeon Design Studio did here. She made the area extra deep for growing tushies and weaved in custom millwork with tons of storage. She located it by the window where there’s lots of natural light.
Gingham Style
Pattern, even subtle, is a simple way to create punch in a space, like in this room by Adena Ditkofsky who specializes in kids’ interiors. Here, mile-high gingham curtains in a neutral colourway bring gorgeous zing to a girl’s nursery.
Reinvent the Rainbow
Vivid colour is so joyful in a nursery. This modern geometric rainbow is by Hana of Hana’s Happy Home. She created it for her friend’s daughter’s bedroom. Made entirely out of paint (and sweat equity), it’s a major pick-me-up compared to the dreary before pics. Follow Hana’s steps to make one yourself!
Double-Duty Furniture
Set against a blush pink wall, a handmade Moorish chest (or any eye-catching dresser) can grow with your little girl, as seen here in actress Tamera Mowry’s daughter’s room. No need to buy a special change table — just put a pad on the surface.
Sumptuous Snippet
Plush pink pillows are a simple way to style a girl’s nursery. Pile on a mix of cushions in different shapes and textures. For safety reasons, don’t forget to remove them at bedtime!
Fresh Details
Don’t forget to incorporate details into your little girl’s nursery. Here, stacked books in pastel hues plus a posy of fresh white roses equals on-point styling.
Old-School Style
For your girl’s nursery, why not turn to the classics? This character-filled nursery by LC & Kel Interiors taps into the past for a charming, nostalgic feel. The gallery wall is made up of antique frames and prints, while the Jenny Lind crib with its timeless spools takes us back to a slower time.
Go With the Grain
Natural-toned woods are a failsafe choice in a nursery. This crib material offers an un-fussy warmth that looks great against every colour choice and will never go out of style. Case in point: the Babyletto Natural Lolly Crib made of New Zealand pine that transforms into a daybed and toddler bed with ease.
Glitzy Mirror
Mirrors aren’t the first thing you think of in a nursery. And yet they beautifully bounce around the light and — if you choose an elaborate Venetian mirror — have a girly elegance to them, as seen in this nursery by designer Kate Davidson of Kate + Co.
Supersize Stuffies
Nurseries and safari animals. Best. Combo. Ever. We like the gargantuan giraffe designer Kate Davidson of Kate + Co chose for this nursery.
Textural Message
Rattan and bamboo has dominated interiors for years now. It has a breezy vibe that’s simply unbeatable, as seen in this nursery by designer Adena Ditkofsky of Decorette Kids’ Interiors. Psst: secondhand shops are excellent sources for this old-school favourite material.
Woodland Friends
In her daughter’s spectacular nursery, Mysha of Remington Avenue brought together so many fantastic elements it’s hard to point out just one. But the elephant in the room — er, bunnies, owls and deer — is definitely the wallpaper of cavorting woodland animals. (That’s Oh, Deer! Wallpaper by Anewall.) The rope light and woodsy rafters, as well as complementary blue wall, are also perfection.
