As we head into a new year, it’s time to look ahead to the freshest trends that we’re seeing in home decor in 2023. The year ahead actually has us looking back and revisiting the design aesthetics of the 1970s. Earthy tones from paprika orange to marigold yellow and every shade of brown are sure to be everywhere, as well as disco ball-inspired decor, woodsy furniture and retro kitchenware. Read on for our full list of predictions for the year ahead.
Gothic Interiors
Decor lovers are taking inspiration from gothic aesthetics with “moody living rooms” and “dark and moody bedrooms” seeing particular growth from Canadians on Pinterest. If you’re looking to bring the goth aesthetic into your home, start with rich, dark tones for the walls and furniture. Add in interesting textures like velvet and play with height by adding interest through lighting features that play with dimension (like this overhead light, or plenty of candles of varying heights).
Folksy Florals
2023 sees more coziness brought to life in home design through folksy floral print accents from wallpaper to duvet covers and art prints. Steer away from the bright and saturated patterns as florals that evoke calm and crafty vibes are expected to be especially popular.
Pops of Paprika
Another colour we expect to see a lot of this year is this spicy shade of paprika (as seen on this single-seat velvet chair from Made.com).
Cute Coquette
Another trend that’s on the rise into the new year and beyond is this vintage-inspired, soft and girly look that’s inspired by the soft Tumblr girl aesthetic oh-so popular in the early aughts. Delicate wallpaper in pastel tones, white furniture and gilded mirrors are the mark of this home trend (and don’t forget the soft indie music playing in the background to complete the vibe).
Dark Academia
Dark academia home decor creates the perfect mood for cozy nights in spent reading by a fire. Expect rich tones on the wall, dark wood furniture and plenty of books (nestled on black bookshelves) to fill up your home office, library or study.
Gallery Walls
Gallery walls never really go out of style. They’re a great way to fill a wall with colour without having to invest (and even more difficult, decide on) a large art piece or commit to a dramatic pop of colour on the walls. They’re also easy to create by sourcing a mix of thrifted, vintage and new frames for an interesting mix of colours and designs. In 2023, we’re predicting this trend will be more popular than ever, with a focus on vintage arts and frames.
Kitschy Kitchen Decor
Vintage art isn’t the only retro trend we’re seeing on the rise. This year, we’re predicting a surge in kitschy-cute kitchen decor like colourful Pyrex kitchenware that plays on both the ’70s trend and some of the year’s top colour predictions, like paprika. Other adorable vintage kitchen items to watch for include vintage cookie jars, mugs and tea towels.
That ’70s Decor
Expect to see ’70s references surging in popularity thanks to stars like Harry Styles and Taylor Swift really leaning into the aesthetic this year. Low, modular furniture, earthy colour palettes (think oranges, yellows and greens) and bold patterns are all marks of the era that will make their way into home designs in 2023.

Terrazzo Tile
You can bet that you’ll see more terrazzo tile popping up in both kitchens and bathrooms throughout 2023. From subtle and subdued monochrome terrazzo to bright, sprinkle-coloured splashes, this unique tile adds interest and earthiness to any space and we’re predicting it will be one of the most sought-after tile trends of the year.
Wooden Decor
The cottagecore vibes continue into 2023 with wood being a major trend for small furniture and decor items from wooden table lamps to vintage wooden clocks (both seeing an increase in search from Canadian Pinterest users). This wooden table lamp from West Elm plays on this trend and has a retro ’70s feel to keep your home decor right on the pulse of what’s trending in 2023.
Disco Ball Everything
We think that this glitzy trend (that just so happens to be one of Etsy’s top predictions for the 2022 holiday season with a 346% increase in searches for “disco ball decor”) will continue well into 2023. From disco ball planters to the most whimsical baby pink disco mushrooms or cherries.

Macrame Accents
We’re predicting that DIY arts and crafts will hold steady in popularity, with a macrame projects being one of the top choices for crafters everywhere. Wall hangings and macrame hanging planters are on the rise with Canadian Pinterest users and we expect to continue to see these do-it-yourself projects popping up in home designs throughout the next year.
Marigold Accents
Expect to see pops of rich yellows for accent pieces like chairs, rugs, throw pillows and statement walls throughout 2023. If you’re looking to add this trending colour to your home decor for an affordable price, IKEA will be featuring marigold heavily in their AROMATISK collection.
Dark Wallpaper
Overall, we expect to see darker wallpaper on the rise over the next few months. Though the more brooding bedroom look is in, not all dark wallpaper has to lean on the gothic side, as can be seen in this feminine bedroom wallpaper that brings a softer side to black wallpaper.
Marvelous Marble
Expect to see more marble in eye-catching contrasting shades, like this gorgeous dining table from CB2. Take advantage of this home decor trend with statement furniture pieces, or through on a smaller scale with candle holders, serving trays and planters.
White Kitchens
We expect the reign of the white kitchen to be back and stronger than ever (after a brief turn to more colourfully accented kitchens over the past year). It’s easy to see why this trend has such popularity: white kitchens are classic, clean and stylish, making them a perpetual favourite of designers everywhere. Canadian Pinterest users have increased their interest in “white kitchens” and we expect it to be the most popular trend in kitchens over the next year.
Wicker Furniture
Wicker furniture has seen a steady climb in popularity, and we’re loving this boho-chic look both indoors and outdoors for 2023.
Arches
Arches are everywhere! From arched doorways to arched mirrors and feature walls with arched designs, we’re loving this curved trend. They add a fresh and contemporary feel to your home design.
Thrifted Gems
Expect to see an emphasis on previously-loved furniture pieces in 2023. The cardboard furniture era is on the decline as design lovers seek to invest in quality pieces that will last a lifetime (and beyond), with a particular focus on thrifted and antique wood furniture.
