The most magical rooms in the home is where the tots rest their stubborn, ahem, cute little heads. Children are inherently creative. Be inspired by them and really go all out when decorating – commit to a theme down to the duvet! Or plaster the loudest wallpaper you can find filled with dancing fairies and woodland creatures. Anything goes! Here’s some of our favourites.
Bohemian Rhapsody
We love a punchy wallpaper and this one doesn’t disappoint. With its plump roses and mustard backdrop, the gorgeous hues feel nostalgic. Melanie Raver of Rave Interior Design carried the colours throughout her daughter’s bedroom that’s anchored by the rattan bed. From the pompom-trim curtains to the patterned rug and brass sputnik light, it all works so well.
Out of This World
Painting your child’s ceiling an unexpected dramatic colour, like black, can make the room feel warmer and cozier. We love how Sebastian Clovis and his team incorporated a subtle space theme that won’t feel too junior for their kids as they grow older.
Pale Blue Highs
The corners in a nursery are every bit as important as the crib – so are the ceilings. In this lovely nursery by Design Manifest, the often-overlooked ceiling is treated to a blast of blue and gold speckles. Soft textiles and gentle patterns – in the fun blinds and wildlife mural – create interest without feeling busy. We just want to pad barefoot across the soft carpet and nap in that cozy glider!
Cozy Cuteness
Kids love nooks and crannies – give them places to cuddle with a stuffie, like this one by The Blush Home. Set against patterned wallpaper, a corner canopy makes for a secret hiding spot. Ditto the bottom bunk. Scandinavian decor – we’re looking at you, faux fur layered over rug and copious bedding – turns up the cozy factor.
Pale Perfection
A pale palette and tons of texture give this nursery by Jessica Van Gaalen its groove. The board and batten wall is made of MDF that’s painted in Behr’s Sanderling. Tones of the warm neutral are picked up in the crib, wooden lettering and the walnut base of the Monte Design glider. The plant adds a natural element, and the rainbow mobile a dash of colour.
Flight of Fancy
This fantastical kid’s room is built around the hand-crafted hot-air balloon bed from Circu. The bed comes with a sound system and colour-changing lights in the top part that are controlled by a mobile app (or remote control). Cloud lights and gold accents are luxurious and over-the-top in the best way. Specialists in luxurious themed rooms, we’re also crushing on Circu’s space rugs, especially the galaxy ones.
On Safari
Incredible DIY alert: Jayne Davies of Jayne Davies Interiors built this lovely scalloped bed out of wood for her son, Percy, who clearly likes jungle animals. The dotted wall that recalls a leopard’s spots are carried through to the duvet and adorable animals on the wall.
Timeless for Two
Have you ever seen a sweeter twin’s nursery? Designer Carolyn Wilbrink opted for a beautiful apple orchard wallpaper after finding inspiration from the apple trees outside the family’s front door. Gold sconces and beautiful antique-inspired cribs complete the room.
Star Power
This sweet, softly toned room by Winter Daisy’s Melissa Barling is small but charming and organized. And it’s doing double duty for both a toddler and a baby. The shelves – both for display and storage (don’t forget to anchor it to the wall!) – are decorated with cute accessories. Slouchy seagrass baskets on top offer storage and hit a textural note. The sconces are pretty space-savers, and the star decals are total eye candy.
Magic Mountains
Paint is your best friend in kids’ rooms. You can create any scene your heart desires. Stormy Beaty brought sunshine and peachy-pink mountains to her daughter’s nursery. The coordinating tasselled chandelier, rug and pillow really round out the palette. A showstopper!
Vintage Charm
Decorating your kid’s room is all about adding playful details. In this room, designer Carolyn Wilbrink hand-painted a diamond pattern over the existing wood floors. The finished look is absolutely stunning!
Flawless in the Attic
Rebekah Higgs, the mastermind behind DIY Mom, turned her attic into a whimsical kids’ room perfect for sleepovers. Rebekah says the orderly, four-cubby design makes the small space feel huge. And the decor is delicious! Celestial wallpaper, woven pendants and a mile-long cream-coloured runner are everything. Would you believe she made the bedding and the pillows herself?
Fantastic Fuchsia
Erica Gelman’s daughter must have fun showing off her room to friends. Her interior designer mom designed the custom wall unit trimmed in glammy gold that’s just the spot for that fantastic, large tufted bed. Oversized bolster pillows add whimsy, as do the tiger and giraffe hanging around in the cutest pink zoo in town; they’re from Mastermind Toys and so is the piano in the corner. The vivid floral wallpaper is from York Wallcoverings.
