Yes, you can use wallpaper in a humid, splatter-heavy area, such as a kitchen. You can tuck it under glass or you can choose a product that’s vinyl and/or durable and easy to wipe. So many choices! And the results are ravishing. Get flipping already and prepare to be impressed.
Dine and Dash
Imagine this white kitchen without those fetching flecks of blue. Nice, but not nice-nice. Designer Anita Yokota completed this project in two hours, using Rebecca Atwood’s Double Dash wallpaper. Lining up the dashes is key, so Anita recommends having a friend to help out.
Here’s a Close-Up
Here’s a close up of Anita’s backsplash. She put the wallpaper under Plexiglas “because it is easy to clean and will not crack like glass,” she says.
Sea Scene
Valesca van Waveren creates watercolour paintings and drawings. Here’s her colourful ocean scene for Kitchen Walls showcasing seahorses, coral, lobster and fish. So pretty! Take that, tile! And the paper is specifically for kitchen backsplashes, so it’s heat-resistant and waterproof.
Artful Composition
Backsplashes can function like art in a kitchen. Keep everything neutral and go wild on the backsplash, like in this painterly scene made up of dusky purples, blues and greens that won’t get ruined in the kitchen because it’s waterproof.
How Square
Renting? Then you need this checkerboard perfection in your life. Made of PVC, this wallpaper by Kitchen Walls comes with its own glue and is reusable.
Elegant in Emerald
Sultry and dramatic, this statement backsplash Chattering of Choughs – Arsenic Green (how’s that for a name?) from Annika Reed Studio is so luxurious that it looks like rich velvet. Annika’s wallpapers are wipeable or for added safety, can be tucked under Plexiglas.
Switch Up
The creative mind behind this DIY project placed a patch of Dragonfly Wallpaper by Harlequin under glass, using screws to mount it to the wall. The wallpaper can be switched out at whim. So smart!
Take Flight
A flock of birds on branches is lovely in this traditional kitchen – OK, so it’s technically above the splatter zone, but it’s close enough and pretty enough to be considered as a backsplash. Shelving is a nice way to preserve the paper.
Like the Real Thing
With its intriguing veining, marble is a timeless backsplash material. Get the look for much less with wallpaper. We recommend spending on a luxury paper that won’t look like it belongs lining the inside of drawers.
Graphic Punch
Simple to hang and easy to remove, this Farmhouse Tile from Chasing Paper is terrific if you just can’t be bothered to tile, you’re renting or you simply like to switch up your decor often.
Sleek Cheat
Oh, Carrera marble you make the heart go pitter-patter, especially when you’re not priced like real stone. This gorgeous replica from Chasing Paper elevates a simple, streamlined kitchen.
Spring Has Sprung
A botanical print is suitably paired with shaker cabinetry. Here’s another fun flower print from Sandberg that we’re crushing on. You can’t get this vibe from tile.
Lemon Yellow
Cole & Son’s Cow Parsley wallpaper pattern is a sunny alternative to regular tile, offering a bright focal point in the white kitchen. And the wallpaper will never get dirty because it’s safely ensconced behind glass. It’s win-win.
